Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive physiotherapy treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. 


When our physiotherapists use shockwave therapy, it can help to reduce pain and inflammation, promote tissue repair and regeneration.


The sound waves are applied to the affected area using a handheld device, and the treatment is typically performed over 3-5 sessions. While shockwave therapy is generally considered safe, there are some potential side effects. The most common side effects of shockwave therapy include pain, redness, and swelling in the treated area. These side effects typically resolve within a few days after the treatment. In rare cases, shockwave therapy can cause more serious side effects, such as nerve damage, hematoma, or skin burns. However, these complications are extremely rare, and most patients don’t experience any adverse effects from the treatment.


Shockwave therapy is used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including:


Plantar Fasciitis: 

The pain in and inflammation of your foot caused by plantar fasciitis can be reduced by shockwave therapy. The treatment works by stimulating the body's natural healing processes, which causes a reduction in the painful symptoms in the foot.


Tendinopathies: 

Tendinopathies such as achilles tendinopathy and supraspinatus (a muscle in the shoulder) tendinopathy are common conditions characterised by pain and inflammation. Shockwave therapy can treat tendinopathies by stimulating blood flow to the affected area, promoting tissue repair and regeneration.


Calcific tendinitis: 

Shockwave therapy can be used to break up the calcifications in calcific tendinopathies, such as achilles calcific tendinopathy helping to reduce symptoms.
